(All default settings, no changes) and following the driver installation I can succesfully run nvidia-smi which gives me the correct output.
But if I stop the instance (Without changing anything on the VM) and restarting it and run nvidia-smi again I get:
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
In other words I can't reboot the VM without losing the driver.
Is that the expected behaviour? Is this fixable? I don't really get the point of having a VM if you can't stop and start it.
I just used this image:
https://console.cloud.google.com/marketplace/details/nvidia/nvidia-quadro-vws-ubuntu-18
I just double checked and can confirm it's reproducable.
Edit:
I was thinking about this. I am using the 300$ Trial account currently (because - why say no to free money?), could that be a problem?
